Peranakans are descendants of early Chinese migrants who settled in Penang, Malacca and Singapore, inter-marrying with local Malays. Nonya cooking is the result of blending Chinese ingredients and wok cooking techniques with spices used by the Malay community. Some of their famous dishes are Asam Fish, Kangkung Belacan, Ayam Pongteh, Ayam buah keluak (chicken cooked with buah keluak in a reddish curry. Buah keluak lends more flavouring and scents to the curry) , Kerabu bendi .......
We usually go to Makko Nyonya Restaurant for nyonya food, the restaurant eastablished in the early 1980s & it is run by Madam Chock who is a fourth-generation Malacca Nyonya descendent. These are the dishes we usually order.. Ayam Pongteh, Kangkung Belacan, Asam Fish, Sambal Petai Prawn.....
